Race of the Year Award for Surfers

The Discovery Surfers Challenge has won an award for Race of the Year 2011 from The Goons.

The Goons is a club of mostly former road runners and the members thereof have more combined years of experience in the sport than any other club or association in South Africa.

The Goons meet a couple of times a month, once for a meeting and once for lunch and they raise money to assist those in need whenever they can. They also assist at numerous races with a state of the art water point and breakfast.

This year the Goons also assisted Surfers with the inaugural Junior Surfers.

The Goons Awards is an annual event and the top athletes of Border/Kei are duly recognised for their achievements. This is highly pertinent given that Border Athletics have long since stopped doing so.

Race organisation is dear to the hearts of all Goons given that it is where most of them excelled. Thus races are judged throughout the year and a winner chosen. This is the first time that an event not in the mold of an organised road race has won the award.

Neville Wilkins was on hand to receive the trophy in front of a number of his committee members.
