Surfers Challenge 2010 From My Fishing Ski by Nick Pike

While I am thrilled to share with you my story of the 2010 Discovery Surfers Challenge as experienced from a fishing ski it is also with a touch of sadness that I must mention the passing of much loved Mick Pollock. A celebration service was held in honor and memory of Michael Blair Pollock at the East London golf club on Tuesday evening 16/2/2010 and what a special occasion it was. Mick came from an era when gentlemen were cut from a finer sort of cloth than they are today and I count myself hugely privileged that I did some holiday work in his shop as a student. He would ruffle my hair with his hand and ask “Nicky my boy, how are you today?” A more genuine smile you could not find. 2010 Surfers Challenge Wrap Up by Bob Norris

The 2010 Discovery Surfers Challenge was billed in the run up to the race as likely to be one of the toughest ever. It lived up to that billing and more.

The course had been lengthened by almost a kilometre due to high water under the Gonubie boardwalk. The running area on the other hand was more than halved due to the spring high tide. The rapidly flowing Gonubie River must have looked like the Amazon to those not proficient in swimming. Readmore…

It is hard to describe the thrill that is The Discovery Surfers Challenge. The vibe of this event is something to behold. A popular clothing brand claims “Only a surfer knows the feeling”. Well, only a surfers marathon entrant knows this feeling. Be you a walker, runner or paddler, if you have ever done this event before, you will know exactly what I am talking about.
